For most of the time skin cancer surgery is simple and straight forward.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Removing the cancer completely most important.<\/span>\u00a0Making your scar looking nice and neat is important too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We haven&#8217;t yet found any magic smooth talk, potions, lotions that will improve surgical scars. Just let your body do its work\u00a0 and it\u2019s free ! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some patients will heal faster than others; It\u2019s just a matter of your genetic make up. If you have made it past 90 years of age,\u00a0 your skin tends to heal very well &#8211; That&#8217;s why you can live to 90 !<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>\u00a0What is skin flap surgery ?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">As the name suggests, a flap of skin is dissected and pulled over to cover the open wound. It takes experience to judge what type of skin flap and how much dissection is required for \u00a0successful wound closure. The risk of flap dying is higher with poor handling and smoking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2799 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/crowndermatology.com.au\/crown\/wp-content\/uploads\/skin-flap-on-temple.jpg\" alt=\"skin-flap-on-temple\" width=\"752\" height=\"217\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skin flap on the temple. Excising large tumors in this location can be a real challenge. The doctor must be a able to deal with significant bleeding, nerve injury and distorted anatomy. \u00a0Timid, conservative\u2014minimalist approach will risk incomplete excision of the cancer. Recurrence of cancer in this area can be quite problematic. Injuring to the facial temporal nerve will occur if the nerve is cut either by choice or by accident.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Full thickness skin graft.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2804\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2804\" style=\"width: 1127px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2804 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/crowndermatology.com.au\/crown\/wp-content\/uploads\/skin-graft-nose.jpg\" alt=\"skin-graft-nose\" width=\"1127\" height=\"598\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cancer is removed. Matching skin is taken from a suitable site e.g. behind the ear.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The skin is stitched onto the surgical defect. Cotton dressing\u00a0 (bolster) is tied over the skin graft to press it onto the wound base.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Selecting the right donor skin and good suturing will result in a well healed wound.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Avoid smoking, strenuous activities and keep the dressing dry to allow the skin graft to heal. Stitches and dressing are removed in 7 to 14 days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notice: first set of photos, the cancer was removed from the lower eye lid, skin was taken from behind the ear ( 2nd set of photos) and stitched on. Bolster dressing <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must be kept dry and must not be disturbed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The resulting scar will nice and neat in the majority of cases. The affected leg must be kept elevated, above the shoulders ,for 2 weeks. We therefore, like to keep the graft to 3cm or less.\u00a0 NO SMOKING or the skin graft will die you will be back again for more skin surgery.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Radiation therapy<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 359px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/parraskincancer.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/radiation-therapy-to-nose1.jpg\" alt=\"radiation therapy\" width=\"359\" height=\"181\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Generally you will get 95%+ cure rate for the common BCCC\/SCC skin cancers. Good for 50+ y\/o and for difficult to operate on site or size.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Radiation therapy<\/strong> for skin cancer, is available at various\u00a0hospitals, Usually reserved for multi-focal cancer, Cancer in awkward areas and for the elderly. The patient will usually be 60 or older.
